How to Tell If Your Water Broke (or if you just peed)

How to know if your water has broken or you just peed

If you feel wet or feel a flow down your vagina and want to know if your water has broken or it’s a bladder problem, there are specific ways to find out on your own. Still, ensure to call your doctor or midwife for confirmation.

Amount of the fluid

When you notice your underwear is wet, first check the amount of liquid that flowed down. It is most likely a vaginal discharge or urine if the amount of fluid is small. This is normal during pregnancy.

But it still could be amniotic fluid. The amount of liquid when your water breaks depends on some factors, such as:

  • The amount of amniotic fluid you have
  • The part of the sac that gets ruptured
  • The level of your baby’s head (how low it is)

These factors can help you determine if it is amniotic fluid or urine. If you still are not sure, consider the color.
