In some cases experiencing cramps before your period is due to a condition called premenstrual syndrome (PMS) [2]. PMS is very common in many women, it occurs due to the body changing hormones right before a period. Several other symptoms can be associated with PMS, such as fatigue, tender breasts, and mood swings. However, cramping days before your period is not always a symptom of PMS. The cramps that occur as a symptom of PMS tend to be light and occur primarily in the back. PMS cramping most often occurs 3 to 5 days before your period. Therefore, it might potentially be normal to have cramps 5 days before a period in some instances. Every woman has their own unique way they experience their cramping. When deciding whether or not your cramping is normal, you need to consider your unique situation. If you have light cramps as part of your PMS then you have nothing to worry about. However, if you are experiencing it for the first time, it could be related to a lot of other conditions besides PMS.
