Menstrual Cup: How it Works, Benefits & More

How to use a menstrual cup

If you have decided to use a menstrual cup, you should discuss it with your gynecologist [1]. Even though you can easily buy any of the brands in the market or in stores, you would first need to find out what size you need. The most common size among most menstrual cup brands is small and large.

For you to know the right menstrual cup size for you, you and your doctor should consider:

  • How old you are
  • The length of your cervix
  • If your flow is heavy
  • The firmness and flexibility of the cup
  • The capacity of the cup
  • If you have given birth virginally
  • The strength of your pelvic floor muscles

The small size of menstrual cups is mostly recommended for women that are younger than 30 years and haven’t given birth virginally. While larger sizes are often recommended for women that are over 30 years old, have given birth virginally, and have a heavier flow.
