Menstrual Cup: How it Works, Benefits & More

How to apply your menstrual cup

You should find it relatively easy to insert a menstrual cup if you can put it in a tampon [2]. To properly insert a menstrual cup, follow these steps:

  • Wash your hand with soap and water
  • Apply water or water-based lube to the rim of the cup
  • Firmly fold the cup in half, holding it in one hand with the rim facing up
  • Just like you would a tampon without an applicator, insert the cup, rim up into your vagina. It should sit a few inches below your cervix
  • With the cup in your vagina, rotate it. It will spring open to create an airtight seal that stops leaks.

To be sure that you have inserted the cup properly, you shouldn’t feel the menstrual cup. It also shouldn’t disturb any movement, like sitting, jumping, standing, or any other activities and must not fall out. If you are finding it difficult to apply your menstrual cup, talk to your doctor about it.
