Thrush

Thrush is a yeast infection that is seen on the nipples and in the mouth of the baby.it is caused by a fungus that lives in the digestive tracts. It causes serious pain in the mammary gland. Thrush on the tongue and mouth of babies is called oral thrush. The major cause of thrush is still uncertain but it is a contagious infection. Some symptoms of thrush include:

  • Red cracked nipples.
  • Itchy, flaky skin around the areolas.
  • Redness around the baby’s lips.
  • Bleeding or cracking on lips.

Solutions: proper washing of the hands before breastfeeding, proper sterilization of bottles, toys, pumps and everything that comes in contact with the breast or baby’s mouth. Antifungal medications prescribed by the doctor are a good treatment for thrush.
