Overabundance of milk

Too much pressure can cause the hyperactive production of milk. When the breast milk becomes too much, it leads to other problems like mastitis, breast enlargements or even plugged milk ducts. When the milk flows too fast it may cause the baby to choke when being fed. The causes of overabundant milk are not certain because it mostly occurs spontaneously, but some potential causes include:
- Hyperthyroidism [3]
- Retained placenta
- High level of prolactin
- Excessive pumping
- Benign pituitary gland tumors [4]
- Too much use of anything that increases milk supply
Solutions: always allow the baby to burp frequently, and feed the baby from the same breast for a few feedings in a row. Use the hand or pump to remove enough milk before you feed the baby so the baby doesn’t choke, feed when the baby is sleepy because it causes a gentle latch on and hence the milk flows slowly.
