Most Common Breastfeeding Problems and Solutions

Low milk supply

This usually causes fear for the new mother and frustration for the baby. Some symptoms of low milk supply include dehydration, lack of weight gain and not producing enough wet diapers daily. Some causes of inadequate milk supply include:

  • Certain medications
  • Supplementing breastfeeding
  • Waiting too long before starting to feed the baby
  • Ineffective latch
  • Breast surgery

Solutions: make sure the baby is latched on and positioned properly, feed the baby more often for at least 1-3 hours around the clock, offer both breasts while feeding, make sure to use the pump in-between and after feeding, and follow a well-balanced meal plan, drink plenty of fluids and rest well.
