Type 1 Diabetes Pregnancy and Placental Insufficiency

Causes of placental insufficiency

Damage of the placenta can arise from different health and social problems such as:

  • The usage of cocaine or other hard drugs by the pregnant woman
  • Medical conditions that lead to blood clotting.
  • Diabetes
  • Not giving birth at the due time or period.
  • Anemia [3]: this results from a lack of iron in the pregnant mother and may affect the placenta.
  • Smoking
  • Having an abnormal body shape.
  • Usage of some medications may also increase the risk of the placenta being abnormal, not attaching to the womb surface properly and these medications may not allow the womb to grow big enough for the appropriate space required for the fetus.
