A Guide to Flossing Children’s Teeth

Types of floss

People tend to use other things such as floss in an attempt to remove debris from their teeth. These include paperclips and pins, not only are these ineffective but can also cause more harm than good and cause injury in the mouth. Floss or flossers are the only things you should use for your teeth.

There are different varieties of floss available, such as:

  • Flossing tools [4], such as flossers or floss picks
  • Waxed versus unwaxed
  • Traditional spool string
  • Flavored or unflavored

These types of floss are equally effective, as long as you apply them thoroughly. Although you may prefer some to others. For example, Flossing tools are easier to control. This may make them preferable when flossing for your kid. However, they may be more expensive than traditional floss. Water flossers are also recommended especially if your child has braces. However, traditional flossing is considered the best option in terms of effectiveness. Water flossers [5] don’t always remove all the plaque, which may leave harmful bacteria on your child’s teeth. In determining the type of floss to use, you can discuss with your child’s dentist to determine which option will work best.
