In Hot Weather
Studies show that maintaining normal temperature can be hard in hot conditions or when you’re outside during summer. It can be difficult to maintain ideal temperatures during a heat wave or when you’re outdoors during the summer months. You can do the following things to keep your baby cool:
- Reduce your baby’s room temperature to below 75°F (23.8°C). People without air conditioning can use a fan, but it should not be placed directly on a baby at full blast. However, you can use an oscillating (moving back-and-forth) feature or point it, so it spreads air around the room.
- Your baby should not have direct contact with sunlight, especially during peak hours of the day which include 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. You should also avoid exposing your baby to the sun through windows because it increases the heat.
If cooling down the room doesn’t work, you can move your baby to a cooler place in the house. You can also close curtains to reduce heat.
- You can go out during heat waves if you don’t have air conditioning. You can go to stores, libraries or cooling centers built by your community.
- You or any adult should always be with your baby in your vehicles. Even on cool days, the intensity of heat in a car is high, which can cause heat stroke [2] or death.
