Is Your Baby Overheating? Signs, Tips and Prevention

In Hot Weather

Studies show that maintaining normal temperature can be hard in hot conditions or when you’re outside during summer. It can be difficult to maintain ideal temperatures during a heat wave or when you’re outdoors during the summer months. You can do the following things to keep your baby cool:

  • Reduce your baby’s room temperature to below 75°F (23.8°C). People without air conditioning can use a fan, but it should not be placed directly on a baby at full blast. However, you can use an oscillating (moving back-and-forth) feature or point it, so it spreads air around the room.
  • Your baby should not have direct contact with sunlight, especially during peak hours of the day which include 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. You should also avoid exposing your baby to the sun through windows because it increases the heat.

If cooling down the room doesn’t work, you can move your baby to a cooler place in the house. You can also close curtains to reduce heat.

  • You can go out during heat waves if you don’t have air conditioning. You can go to stores, libraries or cooling centers built by your community.
  • You or any adult should always be with your baby in your vehicles. Even on cool days, the intensity of heat in a car is high, which can cause heat stroke [2] or death.
