Copper IUDs
The copper IUD, also known as ParaGard, is a plastic, T-shaped device that has a copper wire around it. Its primary function is to stimulate an inflammatory reaction in your uterus, which prevents the activities of sperm. This prevents fertilization, and as a result, prevents pregnancy.
Copper IUDs can last up to 10 years, after which they must be replaced. They can cause side effects, such as:
- Heavy bleeding during periods
- Anemia [1]
- Vaginal discharge [2]
- Backaches
- Severe menstrual pains
- Vaginitis [3]
- Painful sex [4]
- Bleeding between periods
- Cramping
Weight gain is not a side effect of the copper IUD.
