Egg Donation – Procedure, Donor Criteria, and Legal Implications

Brief Description

To avoid complications, every possible donor will undergo several tests to study the health of their eggs. Scientists at the fertility centre will also conduct a thorough selection test to know if a donor is fit. They will also ensure the donor goes through the proper legal processes.

Your doctor will administer drugs to halt your regular menstrual cycle. You must take the medications before the procedure begins. These drugs may have different side effects, such as:

  • Fatigue [1]
  • Hot flashes
  • Body aches
  • Headache

Your doctor will prescribe fertility medications to the egg donor. The fertility medications will strengthen the ovary to produce many eggs at a time. This process is called hyperstimulation. The fertility medications must be self-administered via injection into the skin or muscle.

Sometimes, the donor may have several side effects, like soft breasts, unstable moods, and injuries at the injection site. Some women may also experience chronic ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome (OHSS), which is caused by many eggs in the ovaries. It is essential to contact your doctor urgently if you experience ovarian hyperstimulation syndrome.

Specialists advise donors to have protected sex or stay away from sex to reduce the chances of getting pregnant before collecting the eggs. During the donation process, the donor will undergo several ultrasound examinations and blood tests to regulate the effects of the drugs.
