Egg Donation – Procedure, Donor Criteria, and Legal Implications

Extraction process

Specialists will administer a final medication to the donor before the eggs are extracted. The drug is required to prepare the donor for the extraction process. Your doctor will conduct a transvaginal aspiration to remove the egg from the donor’s ovaries. The aspiration involves placing an ultrasound probe into the vagina and retrieving the egg from the follicles with a needle. In most cases, the procedure may occur for over 30 minutes. The donor may need an anaesthetic, sedatives, and painkillers to make the process easier. Also, the donor does not need to be hospitalized for an extended period.

What happens after donation?

After donation, most women may need adequate rest to regain strength lost during transvaginal ovarian aspiration. Some women do not need rest and may return to performing their daily activities after the procedure. Some clinics offer aftercare services to donors. It would help to visit a psychotherapist or counselor after the procedure to treat any mental or psychological issue.
