Rhonchi and Rales – What to Know About Lung Sounds

Can you feel abnormal lung sounds?

Rales and rhonchi produce different sounds. But they both mean there is a problem with air passage through the lungs. When air passage is hindered, you will experience specific symptoms that will be unique to what is responsible for the sound rather than the form of sound. You may experience the symptoms common to both rales and Rhonchi, such as:

  • Shortness of breath
  • Coughing [4]
  • Weakness or fatigue [5]
  • Pain with breathing
  • Breathing problems

In some cases, medical care is needed immediately. For example, people with severe breathing difficulties or changes in the colour of fingernails to cyanosis (bluish tint) should contact a doctor directly.
