Sudden Ankle Pain without an Injury: Causes and Treatments

Bursitis

This is quite common. It happens when the small fluid-filled sacs (bursae) that act as cushions between the bones that make up your ankle joint become inflamed; this is known as bursitis of the ankle. It can be caused by an injury, and could also be as a result of overuse of the ankle.

Several conditions can lead to bursitis including arthritis [3] and gout. Even just the extremely tight pair of shoes can be the cause. The condition usually develops slowly, the first symptoms are swelling and severe pain in the ankle making it difficult for you to be able to walk.

Infections

There are certain bacterial infections that can affect the bones and joints, example of such bacteria includes:

  • Streptococcus [4]
  • Enterobacter [5]
