Sweating Out a Cold: Does it Hurt or Help?

Tips to Help Recover from a Cold

There is no exact cure for a cold once you have been infected. However, certain tips can help relieve symptoms, and make them more bearable. These tips include:

  • Rest Up: Getting enough rest will allow your body to fight off the illness. Try to get up to 10 hours of sleep each night and avoid strenuous activities during the day.
  • Stay hydrated: Staying hydrated will not only help fight the infection but also loosen mucus. Warm tea or broth is recommended to help soothe a scratchy throat. You should also avoid food or drinks that can cause dehydration, such as salty foods, caffeine, and alcohol.
  • Use a humidifier: Dry air has been confirmed to make symptoms of cold worse. Humidifying the air can help relieve congestion and keep your nasal passage moist.
  • Gargle saltwater: This can help reduce pain and swelling from sore throat. Ensure to not swallow the water.
  • Use Over-the-counter (OTC) medication: OTC medications can help relieve symptoms. Pain relievers [3], decongestants [4] and expectorants [5] are recommended to help ease your symptoms. Ensure to follow the right dosage.
  • Do not smoke: Smoking will slow down your body from fighting the cold.
