What Is Skinny Fat?

Who Is More Likely to Be Skinny Fat?

Certain things may increase your risk of being skinny fat. Most common factors are lack of regular exercise and an unbalanced diet. These factors may also cause certain conditions such as stroke [6], diabetes, and cardiovascular disease [7].

The medical term for someone who is lean but has a metabolic profile that increases their risk of developing metabolic diseases is a “metabolically obese, normal weight” individual.

Five major risk factors for this condition include:

  • High blood sugar level
  • High blood pressure
  • Excess fat around the waist
  • Low levels of good HDL cholesterol
  • High triglycerides levels

Individuals over 65 years old who are metabolically obese, normal weight have an increased risk of all-cause mortality, death from any cause, and death from cardiovascular disease.

Research has also discovered that having a high mass of fat and a combination of low muscle mass and strength may be linked with a decline in cognitive ability.
