Scratch from Dog: Health Risks, Treatment, and Prevention

Treatment for dog scratches

Even though it is true that not all dog scratches are a cause for alarm, it still doesn’t mean that they should not be treated. When a dog scratches you, it will most likely cause a tear in your flesh and make you bleed, it is important that this is given first aid treatment immediately. This will help prevent infection and other complications. These immediate treatment steps will go a long way.

  • The first thing to do is to wash the dog scratch wound with warm water and soap, note not to scrub it to avoid worsening it. Rinse the injury with warm water still for at least 5 minutes. Then you can gently pat dry with clean water.
  • If it is still bleeding, apply pressure to the area with a clean gauze pad.
  • Afterward, you can apply an over-the-counter antibiotic cream or ointment.
  • Then finally you cover the wound with a sterile bandage.

This immediate remedy can help prevent further risks. However, you should still watch out for signs of an infection.
