10 Causes of High Cholesterol

High Blood Pressure and Hypothyroidism

High blood pressure [6] is a common disease that is reported to be present in at least 18% of men and 13% of women. The condition does not show any visible symptoms and can only be detected through physical checkups at a hospital or clinic. High blood pressure contributes to the buildup of plaque which leads to clogged arteries. These clogged arteries therefore lead to unholy buildup of LDL leading to high cholesterol levels. The medications taken to treat high blood pressure also affect the levels of cholesterol in the body keeping it higher.

Hypothyroidism occurs when your body does not produce enough thyroid hormones. This low production of thyroid hormones leads to an increase in cholesterol levels. Research has proven that a slight drop in thyroid hormonal levels can lead to sharp spikes in cholesterol build up. These hormones are responsible for helping the liver process blood hence if the liver is unable to process blood efficiently, cholesterol build up occurs.
