Magnesium may help with depression and anxiety

According to research, people with depression tend to have low levels of magnesium in their blood. This is because magnesium is important in brain function and mood regulation.
A study involving nearly 9,000 people found that [25] those below the age of 65 who consumed the lowest amounts of magnesium had a 22 percent higher risk of depression.
Some researchers believe that supplementing with magnesium can help improve the mood of depressed adults. One study found that [26] 450 mg of magnesium supplements worked as well as antidepressants.
A recent review [27] also linked low magnesium levels to increased anxiety levels, but the review acknowledges that the evidence is weak and further is research is needed.
