10 Signs and Symptoms of Iodine Deficiency

Promoting Thyroid Health

The thyroid gland cannot function without iodine. This gland is located at the base of the front of the neck and helps regulate hormone production, controls metabolism, and promotes heart health. When this mineral enters the body, the thyroid gland absorbs it in small amounts to produce thyroid hormones. This hormone is very important as it controls the heartbeat and regulates the speed at which calories are burned.

Insufficient or lack of iodine means the thyroid cannot produce hormones causing an underactive gland, a condition known as hypothyroidism. Excess intake of iodine can also lead to an overactive thyroid gland, a condition known as hyperthyroidism.
