10 Signs and Symptoms of Iodine Deficiency

Symptoms

Here are some of the signs [3] that you may be suffering from iodine deficiency. To avoid health complications, it is best to visit your doctor immediately after you start noticing any of these symptoms.

Enlarged Thyroid Gland

The enlarged Thyroid Gland, also known as Goiter is when the thyroid swells due to too much or too little iodine. An overactive thyroid gland may cause a lump to develop, which can be solid or filled with fluid. This lump is usually noncancerous and is relatively common. It can be removed through surgery or by a less invasive procedure called laser ablation therapy.

Hair Loss

Thyroid hormones contribute towards hair growth for strong and healthy hair because they help with the growth of hair follicles.

When the hormone levels are low, your hair follicles may stop regenerating, resulting in hair loss. Note that not everyone with iron deficiency will suffer hair loss, as a study carried out on 700 patients showed that 30% of the patients experienced hair loss.
