Hospitalization

If your flare up gets severe, you may have to be hospitalized for proper treatment and management. Your condition will be monitored closely by a gastroenterologist and you will get drug infusions to reduce systemic inflammation.
Your healthcare provider will consider the following factors before hospitalizing you for inflammatory bowel disease:
- Signs of malnutrition
- Fever
- Increased heart rate [6]
- Sudden diarrhea and cramping
- Blood in stool
In most cases, people with inflammatory bowel disease have symptoms that persist or worsen after treatment. For example, you may have to undergo surgery if you experience complications such as bowel obstructions and fistula.
