Hyperlipidemia: Symptoms, Causes, Diagnosis & Treatment

Diagnosis

Hyperlipidemia does not come with symptoms. Therefore, the only way to detect it is by conducting a blood test known as lipid profile [5] or lipid panel. The test involves using a lipid panel to make a hyperlipidemia diagnosis. This test tells your cholesterol levels. Your healthcare provider will take a sample of your blood and send it to a lab for testing. The result will tell you the levels:

  • Total cholesterol
  • Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) [6] cholesterol
  • High-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol
  • Triglycerides

It would help to fast for 8 to 12 hours before the blood test. That is, you will avoid drinking or eating during the 8-hours period. Asides from fasting, it is highly imperative to follow your doctor’s instructions. Healthy levels of cholesterol vary from person to person. It usually depends on different factors, including current health concerns and health history. It is best determined with your doctor.
