Causes of Poison Ivy Rash
Poison ivy produces urushiol oil and almost every individual is allergic to this oil. The oil causes an allergic reaction when it touches the skin, resulting in poison ivy rash. The itch rash that develops is a type of allergic contact dermatitis.
Possible Complications of Poison Ivy Exposure
Certain situations increase your risk of problems if you are exposed to poison ivy, poison oak, or poison sumac. These factors include:
- Inhaling smoke: Poisonous plants emit urushiol into the atmosphere when they burn. If you inhale smoke, it may cause a rash on the lining of your mouth, throat, and nasal passages. It may also cause a rash on your face from contact with the smoke. Your lungs are also impacted by oil in the air, which can lead to severe breathing issues.
- Scratching: It’s difficult to resist the urge to touch this irritating rash. However, if you scratch until your skin bleeds, you could contract an infection. Whatever open incision can become infected with bacteria from under your fingernails.
