The Symptoms of Salmonella Infection

Diarrhea

Diarrhea is the hallmark of most gastrointestinal infections. Diarrhea refers to frequent bowel movements that may happen multiple times in one day. The onset of the bowel movements is often sudden and unexpected. People with salmonella infection often experience this symptom. It is one of the most common causes of diarrhea worldwide.

Diarrhea associated with salmonella infection is often watery. The loss of water through feces can lead to dehydration and you may need to drink plenty of water and fluids to replenish lost fluids and electrolytes. This diarrhea can for as long as 10 days [7], but it may be several months before your bowels fully recover.

Most times, the stool does not contain blood. In some cases, the stool is mucoid and contains blood. This is a sign of a more serious infection. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) [8] recommend seeing a doctor immediately if you have blood in your stool. You should also see a doctor if your diarrhea persists for more than two days.
