Asphyxiation, sometimes termed asphyxia or suffocating, occurs when the body doesn’t acquire enough oxygen. Without prompt assistance, it may result in unconsciousness, brain damage, or even death.

Asphyxia is not the same as being asphyxiated. Asphyxia refers to the absence of oxygen, whereas asphyxiated denotes death as a result of asphyxia. The latter is used to explain a person’s manner of passing away.

One of the most frequent causes of fatal injuries is asphyxiation. Suffocation caused 18,924 fatalities in 2018, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) [1].
