What is the Kidney and What does it do?

The kidney [1] is a bean-shaped organ about the size of a fist. It is seated below the rib cage on both sides of the spine (one on each side). They function as filters for waste products in the body, remove excess water, and filter impurities from the blood.

Through the kidney, vitamin D is activated for the absorption of calcium for bone building and muscle functions. Our kidneys also account for the regulation of salt, potassium, and pH in your body. From the kidney a hormone that controls blood pressure and regulates the production of red blood cells.

Various complications can arise from a failed kidney [2]. Swelling legs/joints, a reduced amount of urine, unexplained shortness of breath, persistent nausea, coma, and more are symptoms that can arise from a failed kidney. Chest pain, death, muscle weakness, and permanent damage can result from a consistent decline in kidney performance.
