Risk factors for ascites

According to research, 80% of ascites cases are caused by cirrhosis or Liver damage. Cirrhosis is the most common risk factor for ascites.
Other risk factors of ascites include:
- Pancreatic disease, like chronic pancreatitis, accounts for 1 percent.
- Tuberculosis accounts for 2 percent.
- Heart failure accounts for around 3 percent.
- Dialysis accounts for 1 percent.
2% of ascites cases are due to other factors including:
- Severe malnutrition [1]
- Intravenous drug use
- High cholesterol levels
- Type 2 diabetes [2]
- Obesity [3]
- Ovarian lesions
- Kidney disease [4]
- Endometrial, liver or pancreatic cancer [5]
Hemorrhagic ascites are common in some people. This occurs when blood also accumulates with the fluid in the abdomen. It is usually common in people who have blood in lymph fluid or liver cancer.
