Ascites: What It Is, Causes, Appearance, Treatment

Diuretics

Your doctor may prescribe diuretics to treat ascites. The drug helps relieve symptoms of the condition. The primary purpose of this drug is to increase the amount of salt and water that leaves the body. This helps reduce the pressure within the veins around the liver.

Your doctor will monitor your blood composition while you’re taking diuretics [7]. You will have to reduce your alcohol and salt intake.

Paracentesis

Paracentesis is a procedure that involves using a long, thin needle to remove the excess fluid from your abdomen. Your healthcare provider will insert the needle through the skin and into the abdominal cavity.

The procedure is usually recommended when you have severe or recurrent ascites, or if symptoms don’t improve as you take diuretics.

Surgery

In severe cases, you may have to undergo surgery to treat ascites. A surgeon will plant a permanent tube, known as shunt, in the body. The tube helps change the direction of blood flow around the liver and reduces the need for regular drainage. Your healthcare provider will recommend a shunt if diuretics are not effective.

If your ascites doesn’t respond well to treatment or you have a severe liver disorder, your doctor will recommend a liver transplant. Your doctor may also recommend surgery if your ascites is caused by heart failure.
