Coronary Artery Anatomy
There are four major coronary arteries, and they are all located on the surface of the heart:
- Right main coronary artery
- Left main coronary artery
- Left circumflex artery
- Left anterior descending artery
The heart is a muscle that is responsible for pumping blood to different parts of the body, so it needs oxygen at all times. The four major coronary arteries play significant roles in bringing oxygen and nutrient-rich blood to the heart. Studies show that a healthy heart pumps about 3,000 gallons of blood through the body every day.
The heart, like every other organ or muscle in the body, must be supplied with an adequate amount of blood to carry out its function properly. Inadequate blood supply to the heart can trigger symptoms of coronary artery disease. Accumulation of plaque, and fat deposits are the major causes of coronary artery disease.
