Signs and Symptoms of Osteoarthritis

Bone spurs

Bone spurs [9] are extra bits of bone that may occur naturally or as a reaction to inflammation in the joints. These bony projections are also called osteophytes. If you have osteoarthritis, you can sometimes feel them as small, hard lumps around the affected joints.

These lumps are painless on their own, but they can push into surrounding nerves and intense pain.

Loss of flexibility

If you have osteoarthritis, you may notice that your joints are a lot less flexible than they used to be [10]. You may have difficulty using your limbs to their full range. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention [11] estimates that this symptom affects around 80 percent of people with osteoarthritis.

If you have osteoarthritis, you may need help with simple tasks, such as putting on clothes and shoes, bathing, or sitting and standing. Some people are incapacitated enough to require walking aids.
