Symptoms of cardiac asthma

There are several symptoms of cardiac asthma some of which include:

  • wheezing
  • difficulty breathing
  • breathing quickly
  • coughing
  • grunting
  • frothy sputum
  • bloody sputum
  • orthopnea (shortness of breath when lying down)
  • rales (abnormal noises heard when listening to the lung with a stethoscope)
  • paroxysmal nocturnal dyspnea (waking up at night gasping for air)

Cardiac asthma symptoms may also be an early sign of heart failure or they may also be present along with other heart failure symptoms, such as:

  • chest pain
  • exhaustion
  • fainting
  • unsteady heartbeat
  • skin that looks blue
  • swollen ankles, feet, or legs
  • more weight gained as a result of fluid retention
  • increased need to urinate, frequently at night
