How to Sleep with Asthma: Positions and Tips

Lie on your left side with a pillow between your legs.

For people with asthma who sleep sideways, sleeping on the left side may help facilitate breathing when sleeping. This is particularly true for people with gastroesophageal reflux [2], also called heartburn, a condition that can trigger asthma symptoms during the night. When you sleep on your left side, the angle of connection between your stomach and the esophagus, the shape of your stomach, and gravity can help reduce the risks of having reflux. You can lie on your left side with your head elevated to ensure you’re comfortable throughout the night. You can place a pillow between your legs to make you feel more comfortable.

Sleeping on your left side and placing a pillow between your legs will keep your spine stable throughout the night and improve your sleep posture [3], and as a result, make you sleep better.
