Non-Verbal Autism: Symptoms, Diagnosis, and Treatment

Diagnosis

Multiple processes are involved in diagnosing nonverbal autism. If you notice any behavioural or communication symptoms in your child, you must report the case to a paediatrician immediately.

Your child might need to undergo various medical examination tests to confirm the condition. Your doctor might recommend these tests:

  • Physical exam
  • Imaging tests, such as an MRI or a CT scan
  • Blood tests

Your child may also need a developmental-behavioral paediatrician who specializes in treating disorders, such as autism. The paediatrician may recommend other tests and examinations, such as:

  • A full medical history of the child and parents.
  • A report of hospitalizations, medical treatments, or surgeries your child has experienced since birth.
  • A report of the mother’s pregnancy and any risks or issues that occurred.

Your paediatrician may recommend some specific tests to diagnose the disorder. Tests such as the Gilliam Autism Rating Scale, Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule, third edition (GARS-3), and second edition (ADOS-2) are recommended for children with non-speaking autism. Your child needs these tests to confirm if they have autism.
