Adenovirus Infections: Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

Diagnosis of Adenovirus

You most likely don’t need to visit your doctor if your infection is minor. Consult a medical professional if your symptoms are severe. To support a diagnosis of an adenovirus, they could request laboratory tests. A sample of your mucus may be taken by swabbing your nose or throat. They might also request lab tests if there is an outbreak in your neighborhood. Adenovirus testing in the lab, however, is not common.

To determine if a virus or bacteria caused the infection, your child’s doctor may order one or more of the following tests in addition to a physical examination:

  • A nurse will draw blood from a vein in your child’s arm for a blood test.
  • Your child will urinate into the cup the nurse gives you for the urine test.
  • Swab test: A nurse will take a sample of mucus from your child’s nose using a cotton swab.
  • Stool test: You’ll bring a sample of your child’s feces to the doctor’s office from home.
  • An expert will use a little quantity of radiation to capture photographs of the inside of your child’s chest during a chest X-ray [5] while they are lying still.
