Adenovirus Infections: Causes, Symptoms and Treatment

Treatment for Adenoviruses

Adenovirus infections are not specifically treated. Since most infections are minor, symptom alleviation is all that is needed. Most symptoms can be treated with over-the-counter painkillers and fever reducers. Additionally, remember to get enough rest and to hydrate well.

Treatment with antiviral drugs is ineffective in those with strong immune systems. An adenovirus is immune to antibiotics.

Make sure to see your doctor if you have serious symptoms or a compromised immune system. To aid in your recovery from a major infection, you could require hospital treatment. Rarely, you could require treatment with an antiviral drug such cidofovir or ribavirin.

To help your child in feeling better, you can:

  • Drink a lot of liquids. Children lose fluids due to diarrhea, vomiting, and fever. Dehydration is a possibility. For kids to stay hydrated, water or 100% fruit juice are the best options. You might also give an electrolyte-containing children’s solution a shot.
  • Decongest the area. Help your child to frequently blow their nose. Put a few drops of saline spray or drops into the nostril of an infant. Mucus should then be removed using a bulb syringe.
  • Turn on a humidifier with cool mist. Your child’s breathing will be made easier thanks to the moisture.
  • Lower the fever. To reduce pain and a fever, ask your doctor if you can give your kid acetaminophen (Tylenol) or ibuprofen (Motrin).
