What can I do to lower my chance of getting an adenovirus?

As long as you can protect your family and yourself, you can lower your risk of contracting an adenovirus infection. Infection prevention strategies include:

  • Wash your hands frequently with soap and water. At least 20 seconds to wash.
  • If you haven’t washed your hands, don’t touch your mouth, nose, or eyes.
  • Try to avoid being around sick folks.
  • Frequently wash and sanitize your child’s toys.
  • Use a solution of bleach and water to clean worktops, sinks, and other hard surfaces.

Take action to stop the spread of the adenovirus if you are already ill. You can protect other people by

  • If you are sick, stay home.
  • Using a tissue or your elbow to catch your sneezes and coughs. Never sneeze or cough into your hand.
  • Not using other people’s plates, glasses, towels, or pillows.
  • Avoiding eye contact with others. Do not embrace or kiss.
  • Frequently washing your hands.
