Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS): Symptoms, Causes, Diagnosis & More

Diagnosis

It is very difficult spotting ankylosing spondylitis because so many people experience back pain (the main symptom) and it may not be linked to the condition. There is also no particular test to confirm a person has AS. Doctors mostly rely on the symptoms manifesting, physical exams, and blood tests.

Diagnosis is more difficult in women than men because the disease is more popular among men. In some cases, doctors also do an X-ray or an MRI. However, this does not help all the time, because joint damage doesn’t show up immediately on imaging tests.
