Ankylosing Spondylitis (AS): Symptoms, Causes, Diagnosis & More

Imaging tests

X-rays help doctors check for changes in the joints and bones. However, the visible signs of ankylosing spondylitis may not be obvious in the early stages of the disease.

An MRI provides more detailed images of bones and tissues around joints by using radio waves and a strong magnetic field. MRI scans can show signs of ankylosing spondylitis in the initial stages of the disease, but they are very expensive.

Lab tests

There are no particular lab tests to show ankylosing spondylitis. However, some blood tests can check for markers of inflammation and inflammation can be caused by various severe health conditions.

The blood can also be tested for the HLA-B27 gene. But most people who have this gene don’t have ankylosing spondylitis. People can also have the disease without the gene.
