Avulsion Fracture: Causes, Symptoms, Treatment

Hip

A hip or pelvic avulsion fracture is usually painful, and the best treatment approach, which l depends on the severity. Most hip avulsion fractures occur in the growth plates of children. A growth plate is made up of cartilage, which is not as strong as bone.

Treatment options include resting, and sometimes use of crutches to put less weight on the affected area. Ice and some over-the-counter pain relief medication may also help. According to a 2015 study, [6] a combination of rest and NSAIDs of pelvic avulsion fractures can be helpful. Exercise is also recommended, to improve strength and range of movement in the area.

If the fracture is severe, a bone shift of more than 15mm, a doctor may recommend surgery. Wires, scre s, or plates can help the bone.
