Avulsion Fracture: Causes, Symptoms, Treatment

Ankle

Rest and cold therapy are the first treatment option for ankle avulsion therapy. A doctor may recommend crutches to reduce the pressure on the ankle and a cast or walking boot to stabilize the ankle. Exercise guided by a physical therapist can also help improve strength and mobility.

If the ankle does not heal naturally, surveyor align may be necessary.

Finger

Avulsion fracture in the finger also known as maker finger or baseball finger can happen when a fingertip is overextended. It may be difficult for the person to straighten their finger. The most vulnerable fingers to this type of fracture are the index, middle, and ring fingers.

To restore function and prevent deformity and stiffness, a person should get medical care within 1 week of the fracture. In children, cartilage involved in bone growing may fracture in this area. Adequate treatment can help prevent stunted growth.

Treatment involves wearing a splint for a minimum 8 weeks. However, if the fragment is large or the joint is misaligned, you may need surgery.
