Fungal nail infection

Fungal nail infection occurs when a fungus enters the wound around, under, or on the nail. Most fungal infections in the mail are caused by the same fungus responsible for an athlete’s foot. However, other fungi such as molds and yeasts can also affect the nails. Asides from resulting in pain, the fungus can also change the color of your nails. You may experience the following symptoms if you have a fungal nail infection:

  • Nail thickening [2]
  • Crumbling
  • Splitting
  • Separation from the skin

Fungal nail infection can affect other parts of the body if adequate and early treatment is not given. It can also permanently disrupt the growth of the nail and the nail bed.
