Hyperkalemia (High Blood Potassium) Symptoms

Difficulty in breathing

Hyperkalemia can cause some difficulty in breathing. This often presents as shortness of breath. This means that some individuals experience difficulty in taking in oxygen into the lungs when breathing. It is known as Dyspnea in medical literature. Hyperkalemia causes difficulty in breathing because it can disturb the muscles required for breathing. When the muscles required for expiration and inspiration are affected, breathing becomes difficult.

Pain in the chest

Chest pain can also accompany the symptoms of hyperkalemia. It is, however, a nonspecific symptom of this condition. Because hyperkalemia can damage the muscles of the heart, chest pain can ensue. The pain can arise as a result of the damaged heart muscles.

Nausea and vomiting

Nausea and vomiting can arise from hyperkalemia. This is most commonly seen when blood potassium increases instantly. People instantly feel nauseous and some may even vomit on the spot.
