Lung cancer risk factors
Emphysema may not be a risk factor for lung cancer, but there are other factors that can make you more susceptible to cancer. According to research, more than 90% of all lung cancers are caused by smoking cigarettes. Inhaling secondhand smoke regularly can also increase your chances of having the condition. Other risk factors of lung cancer include:
- Exposure to diesel exhaust, asbestos, coal products or other carcinogens
- A personal or family history of lung cancer
- Exposure to air pollution, radon or other environmental hazards
- Receiving radiation therapy [6] to the chest
