Movable Lump in Neck: Potential Causes and Treatment

Goiter

If you have a lump in your neck it may be as a result of goiter. A goiter is a swelling of the thyroid gland, which is located in the front of the neck. One common symptom of goiter is that the swelling moves up and down when you swallow. You are experiencing diffuse goiter when the entire thyroid is swollen and the lump feels smooth to touch. If you feel individual lumps or general lumpiness, it is likely a nodular goiter. A goiter can be easily ignored when they are small, but they can grow to quite large. Symptoms of a severe goiter include:

  • Coughing
  • Tightness in the throat
  • Difficulty swallowing or breathing

Conditions that can cause for a goiter to develop include:

  • Hormonal imbalance
  • Lack of iodine in the body
  • Thyroid cancer [2]
  • The overactive and underactive thyroid gland
  • Lithium intake
