Lice Eggs on Hair Shafts

Head lice are very tiny, but their eggs are even tinier. Called nits, these small eggs stick to the shafts of hair on an infested person’s head. Nits are difficult to spot, especially on hair, and they can be mistaken for other things. Many people mistake nits for dandruff in the hair. A key difference between nits and dandruff is that nits are hard to remove from hair. Dandruff comes off easily.
Nits are easier to spot around the hairline of the neck and near the ears. Empty nits are relatively easier to spot. They are generally lighter in color and are fixed further from the scalp. According to Mayo Clinic [7], finding nits in your hair is not always a sign that you have an active infestation.
