Anaphylaxis

Anaphylaxis [5] is a life-threatening condition that can occur just mere seconds after exposure to the allergen. It characterized by symptoms such as:

  • Swelling of the airways leads to an inability to breathe.
  • Tachycardia, sudden fast-paced heartbeat.
  • A sharp and sudden drop in blood pressure.
  • Circulatory shock
  • Unconsciousness
  • Coma
  • And if left untreated, death.

Anaphylaxis requires an immediate medical response and in the case of an anaphylactic shock, please seek immediate help and dial emergency numbers. People with food allergies are usually given an auto-injector pen popularly referred to as an EpiPen.

This auto-injector pen contains a dose of adrenaline which is effective in treating anaphylactic shock.
