What Is Piriformis Syndrome?

Treatment for piriformis syndrome

There are various ways that you can treat piriformis syndrome, depending on the severity of the condition and other factors that your doctor may consider. Treatment options include:

  • A couple of rest days.
  • Home workouts that lengthen or build the piriformis.
  • NSAIDs [2], or non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medications.
  • Massage as an additional kind of treatment.
  • medications that ease muscular tension.
  • Physical treatment for piriformis syndrome that emphasizes stretching and building up the piriformis.
  • injections of steroids [3].
  • injections of botulinum toxin [4] (Botox®).

Surgery for piriformis syndrome is often not advised unless all other treatments have failed. The nerve may need to have scar tissue or other sources of pressure removed during surgery for this problem.
