Wrist Pain: Causes & Treatment Options

What are the causes of wrist pain?

Let’s take a look at some conditions that commonly cause wrist pain:

Gout

Gout is a form of inflammatory arthritis that occurs due to the accumulation of uric acid, a chemical produced when your body degrades foods that contain organic compounds known as purines.

A large percentage of uric acid produced is dissolved in the blood and eliminated from the body through urination. However, the body may produce excess uric acid and not excrete it adequately.

Excess uric acid can get accumulated in the joints, causing pain and swelling. In most cases, gout pain occurs in the wrists, feet, ankles, and knees.

The following factors make you more susceptible to gout:

  • Excess consumption of alcohol
  • Over consuming foods and drinks that contain high levels of fructose
  • Eating a diet that contains high levels of purine, such as, like red meat and certain types of seafood
  • Certain drugs, such as diuretics [1]
  • Other conditions, like high blood pressure [2], diabetes [3], and kidney disease
  • Living with obesity
